Using a Fire Extinguisher Correctly

Posted on February 23, 2023February 28, 2023 by Perry Thompson

One of the interesting features of our Family Emergency Preparedness class is hands on practice using fire extinguishers, something that most people never do until they really need one. There is no substitute to actual experience. But, if you do need to use a fire extinguisher in an emergency before you have had training and practice keep these tips in mind:

  1. Pull the pin: Locate the pin on the top of the extinguisher and pull it out. This will break the tamper seal and allow you to use the extinguisher.
  2. Aim at the base of the fire: Point the nozzle or hose at the base of the flames, not the top. This will help to extinguish the fire more quickly.
  3. Squeeze the handle: Squeeze the handle to release the fire-fighting agent. If you are using a hose, squeeze the lever to control the flow of the agent.
  4. Sweep from side to side: Move the extinguisher from side to side, covering the entire area of the fire with the fire-fighting agent. Continue until the flames are completely extinguished.
  5. Evacuate if necessary: If the fire is too large or spreading too quickly, evacuate the area immediately and call the fire department.

Remember to follow the acronym PASS to use a fire extinguisher properly:

  • Pull the pin
  • Aim at the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the handle
  • Sweep from side to side

It’s important to familiarize yourself with the operation of a fire extinguisher before an emergency occurs. You should also ensure that the extinguisher is properly charged and in good working order. Your local fire department may be able to offer guidance in properly using a fire extinguisher.
